Sustainability

At this point as I get my first look at environmentalism in general everything is new to me. This class is really the first time I have been forced to think about how I live and how I affect the world around me. I have always had a hard time thinking about what I can do and how I affect the world because of the relative unimportance I see myself compared to the rest of the world. But now after just two classes and a little contemplation I see that it all starts with the individual. As I see sustainability right now I would say that it involves becoming invisible, that is not relying on anything else and being totally aware of your consumptions. I think sustainability is very tough to define strictly and to me it has many different connotations branching out from the individual being conscious of their impact on the environment. I also think that activism, education of others, community action, and the use of renewable resources are all critical ideals that come to mind with sustainability. But at its base, and at least at this point, I believe that sustainability deals with the idea of not taking away from and living in a way that the environment can sustain indefinitely.
