I would tell you about the first day, but it wouldn't be interesting because everything went smoothly. The second was much more difficult. I ended up having to do one of my days over the weekend, which was particularly ridiculous because I was traveling to Houston for the- and prepare for nerdiness here- the Texas Renaissance Festival. I look forward to it all year. I go for the whole weekend. I have friends there that I only see once or twice a year. But more on that later.
I never realized how many resources go into getting there. For one thing, I used more gasoline in one weekend than I had in the past three months combined. Achieving any kind of food efficiency was particularly difficult. Not so much not eating meat, which was the main goal, but in all other aspects. I was staying in a hotel, so we didn't have anyway to prepare food, and thus had to go out for everything besides Free Continental Breakfast. Restaurants always give you too much food, and it really bothered me that being in a hotel I couldn't keep it as left overs. Can you even eat efficiently when going to restaurants? I was still able to cut down my shower time from 20 to 10 minutes, and I barely use the sink. Energy was another difficult category. We weren't there for most of the day, so we didn't use the lights for very long or the TV at all, but I wonder what it means to try being sustainable in more communal buildings like hotels or apartment complexes.
I was thinking a lot about whether sustainability is possible for people who spend a lot of time traveling. I think of it as a lifestyle that requires a certain amount of...settlement? There's so much emphasis on locality that I'm not sure it would be compatible with a lifestyle where you aren't living in one locality. One for my good friends is a vendor who has to travel for most of the year. He teaches people skill games, one of which is greatly beloved by myself. I see him and the group of other people who are learning it every year. Like I mentioned earlier, I have made a lot of friends through that game and through the faire itself that I only see there, and maybe at one or two other events in a year. They're a big part of my life, and a lot of other people's lives, so what would happen? Would that sort of event even be possible when practicing sustainability?
